Composed in 1911–12 while Sergei Prokofiev was still a student at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Piano Concerto No. 1 announced the young composer's bold, virtuosic style and earned him widespread attention. The work gained further prominence in 1914 when he performed it to win the prestigious Rubinstein Prize at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Since then, its compact single-movement design and dazzling virtuosity have secured its place as a favorite among pianists, offering a vivid introduction to the composer's unmistakable musical voice.
